Located on the dividing line between the Markermeer and the Ijsselmeer, the port city is not far from Amsterdam. Due to its central location, Lelystad is an ideal port of departure with many possibilities for a wonderful sailing trip. With a fantastic landscape and an enormous variety of small and well-equipped harbours, the Marker- and Ijsselmeer is the most popular sailing estuary in the Netherlands. Here you will find traditional fishing villages and historic coastal towns, surrounded by pastures and dunes with long stretches of fine white sandy beaches.
From Lelystad you can explore the protected Markermeer, the Ijsselmeer and the popular North Holland route. The small island world of Marker Wadden is particularly beautiful. The small nature reserve was created in 2012 when the excavated earth was filled up during the construction of the dam that separates the Markermeer from the Ijsselmeer. From Lelystad or Enkkuizen you then reach the much more famous Ijsselmeer. Well-known destinations on land and sea are Workum and Hindeloopen as well as many other old Dutch villages and small towns such as the Frisian Hanseatic city of Stavoren.
