Croatia sailing log with route, tips and highlights

A sailing holiday in Croatia combines adventure, relaxation and a deep connection with nature. At the end of September, my colleague Nina from our sales team and I set off for Dalmatia to explore the Croatian archipelago independently.

After earning the Croatian coastal license in spring and completing several days of practical training, our anticipation was sky high. At last we would set sail ourselves.

Day 1: Departure from Biograd, casting off for the south

The journey to Biograd na Moru, one of the most popular starting ports for sailing holidays in Croatia, was completely relaxed. Our yacht, the Dufour 44 "Acrux", was ready for boarding from 15:00. After the first provisions run and stowing our gear, we headed straight out to sea. Freedom on the water was calling.

For dinner we headed to Restaurant La Spuz, where you can berth with your own yacht or, as we did, go ashore by dinghy. After a delicious Croatian meal, we rounded off the first day in comfort on board and admired the sunset over the Adriatic.

Day 2: Breakfast with a sea view and a swim stop in Kosirinia Bay

The second day began with a glorious sunrise and freshly brewed coffee from the Nespresso machine on board. Our breakfast chef Julian prepared a tasty egg dish on the plancha grill, which is built into many Dufour yachts, all with an open sea view.

Together with our skipper Gregor we planned the day. Our goal was Kosirinia Bay, renowned for its turquoise water and perfect for a swim stop. The water was pleasantly warm even in late September, so we enjoyed a few hours of pure swimming delight.

In the afternoon we sailed on to Vodice and moored in the town harbour. After the customary celebratory drink, we enjoyed an unhurried dinner at the popular Harry’s Bistro and Pizzeria and a stroll along the promenade. The evening drew to a close with card games and a glass of wine on board, the quintessential sailor’s routine.

Day 3: Perfect sailing conditions to Murter

After a leisurely breakfast and a brief provisioning stop, we set a course for Murter. The wind was in our favour, which made for perfect conditions to hoist the sails and refresh our skills.

By early afternoon we reached Marina Hramina and were assigned a berth straight away. After a refreshing shower we headed to Restaurant Rebac, our favourite spot directly opposite the marina. We were warmly welcomed and even treated to a complimentary dessert, a fine example of Croatian hospitality.

Day 4: Sunrise and dolphins on the return to Biograd

The final sailing day began with a breathtaking sunrise. After breakfast, Nina and I visited the Pitter Yacht Charter office in Murter to meet our colleagues and exchange the latest news.

On the way back to Biograd we were rewarded with a special highlight. Dolphins escorted our boat for part of the route, a magical moment that will not be forgotten in a hurry. Before returning to Marina Kornati, we made one last swim stop and enjoyed sun and sea at around 25 degrees.

In the evening we concluded our sailing holiday in Biograd at Restaurant Peperino, with excellent food, games on board and the feeling that we had enjoyed four unforgettable days.

Short break, big experience. Rent a yacht in Croatia
Do I need a boating license to skipper a yacht in Croatia?

Yes. To operate a yacht in Croatia you need a valid sailing license, for example the Croatian coastal license, an internationally valid offshore license or a license for coastal waters. In addition, a VHF radio certificate is mandatory unless it is already included in your license. If you do not hold a license, you can simply book your trip with an experienced skipper.

When is the best time to sail in Croatia?

The ideal time to sail in Croatia is from May to October. June and September in particular offer pleasant temperatures, quiet harbours and stable weather, which is perfect for short charters such as our five-day trip from Biograd.

What should I pack for a sailing holiday in Croatia?

It depends on the season. In addition to lightweight summer clothing, bring non-slip shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a windbreaker, swimwear and personal documents such as ID and sailing license.

Is a short charter from Biograd suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. A five-day sailing trip from Biograd is ideal for discovering sailing or gaining your first experience as a skipper. The region around Biograd offers short distances between the islands, well-equipped marinas and many safe anchorages, which is perfect for both beginners and leisure cruisers.

Is there a Nespresso machine on board?

Some yachts are equipped with a Nespresso machine. If it is not standard on board, it can be added for an extra fee when booking or directly on site. This way you can enjoy your morning coffee with a sea view.
