Sailing from Volos: general information about the Greek port city
The modern port city of Volos in the Thessaly region, with 86,000 residents, is one of the largest cities in Greece. It looks back on a long history and is considered the jewel of the Pagasetic Gulf. A stroll through Volos reveals numerous villas, museums, and magnificent churches that reflect the city's prosperity. Along the picturesque seafront promenade you will find many appealing restaurants with views of the open sea. Without doubt, the western side of the harbor, reached via Argonauton Avenue along the promenade, is among the most beautiful parts of Volos. Here, beside fishing boats and yachts, stands an exact replica of the ship Argo, famed in ancient Greek legend.
Yacht charter Volos: varied itineraries and destinations in the Northern Sporades cruising grounds
The Gulf of Volos and the Northern Sporades form a sheltered sailing area that is friendly to beginners and families. Numerous unspoiled coves, warm crystal clear waters, green rolling landscapes, small islands, dramatic cliffs, and in almost every bay a welcoming taverna, all define the Volos sailing region.
The Northern Sporades include the four larger inhabited islands Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, and Skyros, together with several small uninhabited islets with beautiful bays and beaches. These islands are ideal to explore with a yacht charter from Volos.
The name Sporades translates as the scattered islands and the group is renowned for its pleasant climate. Warm temperatures and reliable winds make not only the summer months attractive but also spring and autumn.
Countless bays and coastal towns, together with the Northern Sporades, provide a wealth of options for a perfect sailing holiday in the Gulf of Volos. Distances between islands and anchorages are short and easy to cover. The islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos each have a main harbor and one or two smaller quays. There are many well protected anchorages where yachts usually moor with a stern line to shore. On the larger islands you often find simple facilities at beaches and in coves, such as a coffee bar and a taverna. Thanks to the sailing routes from Volos, the small uninhabited islands see only independent travelers in summer.
Popular sailing destinations from Volos include the towns of Amaliapolis and the small city of Milina to the west, about 20 nautical miles southeast of Volos. Here, sailors will find several idyllic coves between two small offshore islands. Also recommended are the picturesque island of Paleo Trikeri, the coastal village of AG Kyriaki, and the small harbor of Achilleion at the exit of the Gulf of Volos. In the Sporades, the fine sandy beaches of Skiathos are especially popular, as are the striking rock formations of Skopelos.
